Split the board into zones
Start with one row or quadrant. Give each position a mental reference: top left, middle of the second row or bottom corner. Remembering a picture without remembering its location will not help you complete a pair.
A mismatch still gives information
Watch both cards before they turn back over. If one matches a card you saw earlier, prioritize recovering that pair on your next turn. Avoid opening random new cards when you already know where a complete pair is.
When to move to 6×6
Start with 4×4 until you can remember several positions comfortably. The 6×6 board has 18 pairs and requires more attention. Changing size starts a new round. Best results are stored separately by size because the boards are not comparable.
What the result measures
One move means revealing two cards, not one individual tap. The clock starts with your first card. This version rewards fewer moves; time is additional information. Animations distinguish a flip, match and mismatch without changing the underlying pairs.
